This is the blog for GW students taking Human Evolutionary Genetics. This site is for posting interesting tidbits on: the patterns and processes of human genetic variation;human origins and migration; molecular adaptations to environment, lifestyle and disease; ancient and forensic DNA analyses; and genealogical reconstructions.

Journal Update 1: Genetics of Aging and Neurodegeneration

M. A. Lodato et al., Aging and neurodegeneration are associated with increased mutation in single human neurons. Science 359, 555-559 (2018).

(Lodato et al., 2018)
A study published in the February 2nd 2018 edition of Science used novel approaches to understand the link between aging and genetic mutations. The authors note that previous studies had not been able to directly address the association between aging and somatic mutations in neurons. However, they are now able to do this using genome-wide somatic single-nucleotide variant (sSNV) identification. sSNVs are somatic mutations in tissue and many degenerative diseases have been associated with mutations due to DNA damage. Lodato et al. found that sSNVs increased with age and occurred at a higher frequency in individuals with neurodegenerative diseases, suggesting that the accretion of these types of mutations may be a key factor in the formation of these diseases.
