This is the blog for GW students taking Human Evolutionary Genetics. This site is for posting interesting tidbits on: the patterns and processes of human genetic variation;human origins and migration; molecular adaptations to environment, lifestyle and disease; ancient and forensic DNA analyses; and genealogical reconstructions.

Altered DNA and Mental Illness
Many individuals today suffer from a wide range of mental illness. Many genetic researchers have and are currently looking for genetic links to different psychiatric illnesses. One recent study, showed that the inheritance of a translocation linked to mental illnesses is associated with differential DNA methylation at loci that are associated with neuronal development/function and psychiatric illnesses. They found this by examining blood-based DNA methylation in 41 individuals.
