This is the blog for GW students taking Human Evolutionary Genetics. This site is for posting interesting tidbits on: the patterns and processes of human genetic variation;human origins and migration; molecular adaptations to environment, lifestyle and disease; ancient and forensic DNA analyses; and genealogical reconstructions.

Repetitive Elements: Different Subtypes Hint at Distinct Functions

The authors of this paper, Repetitive Elements: Different Subtypes Hint at Distinct Functions, review experiments done by Lu et al. who set out to classify and better understand the role of repeat elements. It was first noted that considerable portions of repeat elements lie adjacent to annotated genes in the mouse and human genome. With this observation, genes were classified based on the particular repeat element to which they are associated. The authors found that genes linked to short interspersed nuclear repeats are involved in RNA housekeeping functions including RNA processing and translation while genes linked to long interspersed nuclear repeats are involved in olfactory receptor and immunoglobulin functions.
