This is the blog for GW students taking Human Evolutionary Genetics. This site is for posting interesting tidbits on: the patterns and processes of human genetic variation;human origins and migration; molecular adaptations to environment, lifestyle and disease; ancient and forensic DNA analyses; and genealogical reconstructions.

Journal Update 2/5: Effects of sex and chronic cigarette smoke exposure on the mouse cecal microbiome
Chronic smoke exposure has been studied in relation to weight loss in patients who have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), but weight loss has not yet been studied compared to sex and the cecal microbiome. Scientists were hoping to uncover the actual mechanism that contributes to smokers losing weight. Their results detected significantly lower body weight in control females compared to control males. They also looked at ovariectomy but this did not reverse the effect of ciggarette smoke on the microbiome. This study is interesting to me because like they said in the paper that weight loss from smoking nicotine has in the past been associated to the loss of appetite but with this new research we could potentially find ways to combat (some of) the effects of smoke on the body.
