This is the blog for GW students taking Human Evolutionary Genetics. This site is for posting interesting tidbits on: the patterns and processes of human genetic variation;human origins and migration; molecular adaptations to environment, lifestyle and disease; ancient and forensic DNA analyses; and genealogical reconstructions.

The Expansion of GMOs in Argentina
Conducting over eight years of field work in Fontana, Argentina, Pablo Lapegna documents the increased use of GMO's and the resulting reactions from the Argentine people. He notes that responses to the use of these crops vary as some people readily accepted and planted them, whereas other people protested and resisted against these crops due to the resulting environmental degradation caused by pesticide drifts. Lapegna highlights the power disparities between those who still farm in a traditional manner versus those who are able to afford genetically modified seeds as well as all of the fertilizer needed to grow these crops. Additionally, he analyzes GMO production on global, national, and local scales, addressing the various reactions and ideologies to this relatively new biotechnology.
