This is the blog for GW students taking Human Evolutionary Genetics. This site is for posting interesting tidbits on: the patterns and processes of human genetic variation;human origins and migration; molecular adaptations to environment, lifestyle and disease; ancient and forensic DNA analyses; and genealogical reconstructions.

Pregnant women are no stranger to genetic screenings, often undergoing a screening for Down syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities at week ten. If you had the power as a parent to know that your child was at early risk or heart disease, diabetes or even Parkinson's would you want to know for purposes of altering your parenting decisions?

MyCode is a research study that takes DNA from a babies umbilical cord to look for mutations in their genetic code, potentially allowing parents a glimpse of the aliments that await their children. Is this the next step to ethical parenting, or will the worry of Parkinson's, though not due to onset for 60 years, ruin the blissful ignorance of childhood?
