This is the blog for GW students taking Human Evolutionary Genetics. This site is for posting interesting tidbits on: the patterns and processes of human genetic variation;human origins and migration; molecular adaptations to environment, lifestyle and disease; ancient and forensic DNA analyses; and genealogical reconstructions.

Hammer Toe Mice Genes Highlight Evolutionary Adaptations

The mouse named Hammer toe which appeared over a half century ago picked the attention of research for his toe morphology (with interdigital webbing) which is different from the toe commonly known of mouse . The researchers revealed that this novel toe morphology is due to the alteration of regulation information for genes. This finding might  serve as evidence for the parallel evolution as the genes expressed in this mouse have been also activated in other animals such as bats (webbed wing).
