This is the blog for GW students taking Human Evolutionary Genetics. This site is for posting interesting tidbits on: the patterns and processes of human genetic variation;human origins and migration; molecular adaptations to environment, lifestyle and disease; ancient and forensic DNA analyses; and genealogical reconstructions.

Mitochondrial DNA variations of Modern Austronesian speaking populations

More news on anthropology genetics, reveals new data on Modern Austronesian AN- speaking Melanesians. Researchers did (mtDNA) analysis for two Austronesian- speaking populations, (Munda and Kusaghe) and an AN- Micronesian population (Rawaki) to find out their genetic similarities to AN- Polynesians in Tonga and non-NAN- speaking Melanesians (Gidra) in Papua Guinea. They found from their analyses that the Munda and Kusaghe populations were genetically close to the Tongan population however this wasn’t the case with the Gidra. The Rawaki population showed no apparent genetic similarities to populations of Tonga and Gidra.
Basically, their results revealed that gene flow from AN- speaking populations originated from Southeast Asia to indigenous Melanesians in the New George Islands.
