Face recognition, the ability to recognize and memorize faces, is
one type of specific cognition that is often thought to be correlated with
general cognition. A recent article on PNAS that studied both identical
and fraternal twins in the UK tested face recognition using Cambridge Face Memory
Test (CFMT) along with object recognition test and general cognitive ability supports
previous studies and indicates that face recognition is substantially heritable
due to genetic influences that are highly specific to this ability. The study
also notes that although correlated with object recognition and general
cognitive abilities, face recognition is genetically independent.
