A recent large scale study within the Basel Genetics Memory Project showed evidence that genes regulating calcium concentrations in neurons are central to cognitive performance on memory tasks as well as functional activation of the hippocampus (a neural structure central to memory processing). It was also found that these same calcium-regulating genes were implicated in risk for Alzheimer's Disease. Data from over 57,000 young and old subjects was analyzed in this study. This approach integrates data on cognitive, neural, and genetic phenotypes in order to gain a more holistic understanding of memory, as well as provide potential diagnostic tools for neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's Disease.
